GHANA TO HOST INTERNATIONAL BREAK DANCE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Africa Breaking Academy (ABA) with support from the French Embassy in Ghana through the Dwabo Small grants Programme 2022, has begun a break dance community outreach programme to control the extent of sex exploitation in some communities across Ghana.

The programme titled, Afro Break Championship ‘Africa Is the Future’ (AITF) and centered on the theme; Promoting Breakdance to Combat Sexual Exploitation”.

The ABA will visit a total of 20 communities across the country to educate, entertain, and harness talents as a means to bring the phenomenon under control.

The project is divided into two, Phase one is AITF Community Outreach which has already commenced at Korle Gonno in the Greater Accra Region. Other communities to be visited by the team include, Nima, Labadi, James Town and Dansoman.

The target group would be taken through an international standard break dance training session once a week for a period of four weeks in order to build their capacity ahead of the upcoming 2022 AfroBreak Championship to be held in Ghana.

This would be followed by a dance sport competition like Paris 2024 Olympics Through a capacity building lecture, participants would be enlightened on the effects of sexual exploitation, and educated on how they can develop and commercialise their break dance skills.

Their goal is to reach an average of 100 persons per community while considering a maximum of 500 persons and more.

Afro Break Championship is Ghana’s first International Break Dance Championship which will host professional dance athletes from Africa and the diaspora including Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Niger, Senegal, France, Mali, Netherland and many others.
