Originator or Influencer? Black Mexxiah Challenges Stonebwoy’s ‘Afro Dancehall’ Claim
Reggae and Dancehall veteran, Black Mexxiah, has made a surprising revelation about the origin of the term “Afro Dancehall.” In an interview with renowned broadcaster SammyFlex on Sammyflex TV, Black Mexxiah clarified that the name actually originated from himself and Samini, not Stonebwoy as widely believed.
Black Mexxiah explained that he had been incorporating the Afro Reggae and Dancehall sound into his music even before Samini came into the picture at “Asaase Ase Records.” He recalled how Samini was initially unsure about how to categorize the sound. Black Mexxiah then suggested the name “Afro Dancehall,” emphasizing that it was a fusion of Afrobeats and Dancehall elements.
According to Black Mexxiah, Samini started using the term long before Stonebwoy joined his Highgrade Family record label and became influenced by the style. This revelation has sparked online controversies, as Stonebwoy has also claimed in other interviews to be the originator of “Afro Dancehall,” attributing his inspiration to the legendary Shabaranks and others.
Black Mexxiah further stated that Stonebwoy was influenced by one of his Afro Reggae Dancehall releases titled “Gblegble vi,” dating back to 1999.
