Anomaa cultural group tackles social issues, creating opportunities with traditional dance

The Anomaa Cultural Group marked its 5th anniversary with a night of captivating dance and music performances in Cape Coast, in Ghana’s Central Region. Over the years, the group has used its artistic platform to address pressing social issues such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, and gender-based violence through cultural storytelling and performances.

Dressed in traditional animal-hide garments, the group showcased Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, mesmerizing the audience with their energetic and symbolic routines. The troupe not only entertains but also educates society on cultural heritage through various artistic expressions.

“We strive to achieve this through traditional songs, dramas, poetry, and music, particularly our signature style known as Ananse Nkonyaa,” said the group’s leadership.

Ananse Nkonyaa, rooted in the indigenous Twi language, reflects on the legendary tales of Kwaku Ananse—a mythical character central to Akan culture. These stories serve as a tool for socialization, imparting wisdom, morality, and discipline, particularly among the youth. The dance techniques accompanying Ananse Nkonyaa involve intricate footwork, sliding, stomping, and rhythmic body movements, all harmonized with traditional singing.

Founded on the principles of unity, the Anomaa Cultural Group also aims to promote national cohesion and cultural diversity.

“Society is often engulfed with challenges, and our group hopes to shift mindsets and habits by intertwining culture with contemporary life,” said the leader.

While staying true to its cultural roots, the group has also evolved into an income-generating venture. With a growing membership of nearly 20 individuals, Anomaa sustains itself through fundraising events, concerts, and performances at corporate functions. The revenue generated is reinvested into the group after covering member remuneration and operational costs.

The impact of Anomaa extends beyond performances. Many young members have joined the group to deepen their understanding of Ghanaian traditional culture, especially as modern households provide limited opportunities to explore cultural history.

The Director of National Heritage and Culture Programs at the Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture highlighted the importance of cultural groups in preserving traditions. “These groups play a vital role in transferring cultural knowledge across generations while nurturing essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and discipline,” he noted.

Anomaa Cultural Group has not only instilled pride in its members and fans but has also provided significant opportunities. This year alone, the group has toured and performed in nearly every region of Ghana. Additionally, two of its members served as cultural judges at the Bibiani Talent Hunt.

However, sustaining a cultural group comes with challenges, including limited rehearsal space and financial constraints. “Our remedy is networking and forming partnerships within the cultural sector,” the leadership shared.

Looking ahead, Anomaa Cultural Group aspires to expand its reach by tapping into Ghana’s tourism sector and embarking on international tours to share its cultural heritage with the world.
