NATIONAL THEATRE OF GHANA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EHALAKASA AND KGL FOUNDATION TO MARK “WORLD POETRY DAY 2023”

World Poetry Day is celebrated on March 21 each year,globally. The day was set aside by UNESCO in 1999. The purpose of allocating a day to poetry was to encourage young poets, and to appreciate the role of poetry in the development and enlightenment of the world. Among its goals is to persuade governments all over the world to provide a proper place for poetry in all systems of education, from primary to higher levels of education.

The National Theatre of Ghana with Ehalakasa celebrate this day every year through a series of activities. This year, the National Theatre of Ghana with Ehalakasa and KGL Foundation have decided to hold poetry workshops in five(5) Senior High schools in the Eastern Region namely; Ofori Panin SHS, Pope JohnSHS, Oti Boateng SHS, Oyoko Methodist SHS and Ghana Senior High School all in the Eastern Region. The idea behind this initiative is to offer students in other regions the opportunity to learn poetry writing,performance skills and appreciation of poetry.

The initiative is in line with one of the goals of The National Theatre “to engage and enrich our communities”. This engagement we believe would go a long way to impact the students positively especially to sharpen their public speaking and writing skills.

Poets from Ehalakasa have partnered with the National Theatre of Ghana for poetry activities over the past five(5) years and are known for their creativity. In the workshop setting they would share their writing experience with students, teach them some techniques in writing, and how to ‘weave’ words beautifully as a weaver would weave the traditional Ghanaian Kentecloth.

KGL Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the KGL Group is the main sponsor for this year’s initiative. The KGL Foundation is indeed committed to providing underprivileged communities and individuals the opportunity to develop themselves through such workshops and to be self- dependent.
