Ghanaian media personality and television producer, Lily Mohammed, has expressed concern over the government’s decision to issue a Ghanaian passport to American streamer and YouTuber IShowSpeed, at a time when many Ghanaian citizens continue to struggle to access basic passport services.
Her reaction follows an announcement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who disclosed on Tuesday, January 27, that the passport was granted after discussions confirmed IShowSpeed’s connection to Ghana. According to the Minister, the move reflects Ghana’s openness to embracing members of the global African family who positively project the country on the international stage.
Speaking on her show on GHOne TV, Lily Mohammed acknowledged the global exposure IShowSpeed’s visit brought to Ghana but questioned the timing and justification for issuing him a Ghanaian passport. She argued that the decision comes amid persistent challenges faced by ordinary Ghanaians who endure long queues, delays, and administrative bottlenecks in their attempts to acquire passports.
“Meanwhile, true Ghanaians are queuing for passports. Ghanaian citizens born in Ghana, who have the right to citizenship, are still queuing for passports,” she stated.
Lily further lamented that many citizens continue to struggle to obtain what she described as a “common passport,” while similar documents appear to be issued with ease to visitors. She stressed that while promoting Ghana globally is important, it should not overshadow the needs and frustrations of citizens.
“It’s time we put some respect and value on our Ghanaian passport and on the country,” she emphasized.
Despite her criticism, Lily clarified that she holds no personal issues with IShowSpeed and commended his adventurous spirit and interest in Ghana. However, she maintained that granting a passport under such circumstances sends the wrong message to citizens still struggling to access basic state services.
